Quarry moratorium
in Sibulan opposed

The Provincial Mining and Regulatory Board has preferred to regulate the quarrying of sand and gravel along the Okoy River in Sibulan, Oriental Negros, rather than experience the ˜hit-and-run" operation of illegal quarry operators.

The PMRB, which acts as the advisory body of Gov. George Arnaiz, has opposed the recommendation of the Sangguniang Bayan of Sibulan for a 10-year moratorium on the issuance of sand and gravel quarry permits to permittees.

PMRB chairman Roger de Dios of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Central Visayas believes the moratorium would only give rise to illegal quarrying of mineral resources along the Okoy River. Following a technical evaluation and joint investigation, PMRB members have decided to pass a resolution to continue granting sand and gravel extraction permits within the Okoy riverbed, thereby denying the request of the town government of Sibulan for a moratorium.

Sexagenarian nabbed
for peddling 'shabu'

A 61-year-old man was caught by police operatives for selling shabu in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Looc, Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros.

The suspect, Jaime Ybañez, jobless and single, was nabbed by members of Task Force 24 led by SPO1 Boy Sanchez of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and C/Insp. Manuel Hidalgo of the city police following a buy-bust operation.

A search of his pockets yielded three more sachets of suspected shabu, P2,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of the nefarious activity, and three P100 bills in marked money, the police said.

DENR men told to
assist NegOr LGUs

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas has directed its personnel in Oriental Negros to assist local government units in complying with its earlier directive to put up a sanitary land fill as mandated by Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

The DENR in Region 7 had earlier sent letters to 21 cities and towns in Oriental Negros reminding them of their obligation to establish sanitary landfills on or before Jan. 26.

The letter signed by former DENR director Julian Amador indicated that mayors of cities and towns who do not comply with the law would face administrative charges.
