Marie Stopes CDO
still valid -- DOH
BY CARLA GOMEZ

A nationwide cease and desist order on Marie Stopes, a non government organization providing family planning services, is still valid and enforced nationwide, Department of Health Regional Director Lydia Depra-Ramos said.

Ramos, in informing Gov. Joseph Maraņon of the status of the NGO, also furnished him a copy of a letter of Director Nicolas Lutero III of the DOH Bureau of Health Facilities and Services.

Lutero said the CDO has not been lifted because of Marie Stopes' continued refusal to apply for a license pursuant to Administrative Order 183 dated Nov. 16, 2004 as an ambulatory surgical clinic providing for surgical sterilization such as Bilateral Tubal Ligation and Scalpel Vasectomy. Perseveranda Sioco of Barangay Sagasa, Bago City, died on Nov. 28 after she underwent surgery performed on Nov. 25 by Marie Stopes doctor at the Bago District Hospital.

The National Bureau of Investigation has been conducting an investigation on the death of Sioco for the possible filing of charges.*CPG
