Budget woes hound
WV Prisaa campaign

Close to P600,000 is still lacking from the P1.7 million proposed budget to fund Western Visayas' campaign in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games in Pangasinan, WV PRISAA athletic manager Roger Banzuela said yesterday.

The bulk of the expenses will cover the transportation of the athletes and officials estimated at P975,600, while the remaining allocation will be spent for the food, accommodation and uniforms of the contingent, Banzuela, who also serves as the chairman of the Region VI PRISAA technical committee, said.

"We will borrow money from other PRISAA member-schools to reach the desired budget, which could be lowered to P1.5 million," he said, adding that collectibles will be gathered from some Western Visayas schools to fund the delegation.

About 213 athletes, coaches and delegation officials will represent the Region VI contingent that will see action in the national meet from Feb. 6 to 11 in the different venues in Lingayen and Dagupan City, Pangasinan. WV PRISAA president Fr. Emilio Jaruda said some universities and colleges from Iloilo and Negros Occidental have already committed to pay their membership fees in advance to reach the proposed allocation.

The Region VI delegation brought home the overall championship of the National PRISAA Games in Zamboanga City last year. Jaruda said he is also waiting for the final list of athletes and coaches to be submitted to the National PRISAA Board for the screening, which is currently going on in Dagupan City.

The Negrenses, composed of standouts from West Negros College, University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, will banner nine out of the 19 sports that the Western Visayas contingent will compete in the national event.

USLS is set to field its squads in women's volleyball, swimming and taekwondo, and men's sepak takraw and lawn tennis, while UNO-R will represent their men and women's table tennis teams.

The Elvis Atinado-mentored Negros men's basketball squad is composed of Wesnecan and Recoletos cagers, while the men's chess squad is comprised of the WNC woodpushers. UNO-R will also have a number of its tankers in the Region VI women's swimming team.

The Negros booters are also supposed to banner the Western Visayas men's football squad, but the sports has not been included in the calendar of events, Banzuela said. *CIT
