Improved right hook key
to KO victory: Pacquiao

A one-dimensional fighter.

Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao bade goodbye to this tag yesterday by using a variety of weapons in a masterful 10th round technical knockout over Erik Morales at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, avenging his loss to the Mexican in March 2005.

Pacquiao showed Morales many weapons in his suddenly-packed arsenal, the newest of which was a right hook that practically paved the way for his trademark left hook that spelled the Mexican's doom in the 10th round. The official time was 2:33 when Morales was decked for the second time compelling referee Kennie Bayless to halt the fight. Getting better and better as the fight wore on, Pacquiao, who improved to 41-3 with his 33rd knockout, had landed 196 of 795 punches thrown that proved too much for Morales (48-4), who suffered the first knock down of his 13-year professional career.

NBA execs set meeting

The officials and members of the Negros Basketball Association will meet tomorrow or Wednesday to finalize the staging of the NBA-Mayor's Cup Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

The meeting will take up the aspects needed to stage the tournament like the officiating of the cagefest among others, NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon said.

He said the tournament will kick off on the third week of February after its opening, which is scheduled this month, has been postponed because the NBA has yet to finalize the tilt with Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

PSDO eyeing sponsors

The Provincial Sports and Development Office is eyeing sponsors to fund the swimming, table tennis and chess competitions of the 2006 Panaad Sportsfest at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City from April 22 to May 1.

Corporate and individual sponsors will be tapped in case the Provincial Government will not be able to give an additional budget for the three proposed disciplines, Manuel De Oro, officer-in-charge of the PSDO, told the DAILY STAR.

De Oro said he will also try to contact his friends who are working overseas and see if they could help out in funding the additional events.
