Dr. Augusto de Viana of the National Historical Institute
announced Thursday that the story of "Fray Butod," the pot-bellied
friar, may be reprinted without infringing on copyright anymore,
one just has to ask the permission of the NHI.
This was welcomed by Dr. Gil Octaviano, one of
the leaders of the Negros Freemasons, who said he intends to study
the possibility of reproducing the Lopez Jaena work for distribution
to students of the province.
Dr. De Viana gave out an initial 10 copies of
the Collected Articles, Speeches and Works of the Ilonggo national
hero Thursday during the commemoration of Lopez Jaena's 110th death
anniversary at the Lopez Jaena Elementary School. Dr. Ludovico Badoy,
NHI executive director, had directed Dr. De Viana to represent the
national agency at the celebration of the 110th death anniversary
of Lopez Jaena by Bacolod City government and education officials,
and various civic and non-government organizations.
Members of the Graciano Lopez Jaena Clan of Negros,
headed by journalist Rolando L. Espina as chair, joined the celebration.
Councilor Ana Marie Palermo, principal author
of the ordinance designating Jan. 19 as Lopez Jaena Day, said she
will study the possibility of replicating some of the educational
materials on Lopez Jaena by the city. "It is important for us to
be able to educate our students, as well as the general population,
as to what Lopez Jaena stood or and what he died for," said Councilor
Palermo.
Virgie Janiola, GLJES principal, received the books
from Dr. De Viana and said she will turn over a copy to City Superintendent
Milagros Gonzales.*
