TKP Cup tips off Sunday

The 6th edition of the Tan Kek Pin Basketball Memorial Cup will kick off at 3:30 p.m. at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School tomorrow.

RG Ballclub-Purefoods battles newcomer Talisay Basketball Athletic Club in Bracket A shortly after the opening ceremonies that will be preceded by a parade and keynoted by Ricardo "Cano" Tan, assistant secretary Department of Transportation and Communication.

The second game of the double-header will showcase Bracket B squads Rentas Knights against Magnolia-Nutrioil.

Teams vying for the crown include Bracket A entries Buddy's Variety Store, Tangub Basketball Association, Your Basketball Athletic Club, Summit/AMG Pawnshop, Panasonic-Po's Marketing and Mambukal Resort, represented by cagers that donned the colors of the Provincial Capitol squad last year.

Also eyeing the championship are Bracket B teams Bacolod Basketball Club, Probac, LXG, Davies-Republic Hardware, Krua Thai/Ice Monsters and New ST Marketing.

The 2006 edition of the TKP Cup will mark the second consecutive year that there will be no defending champion, after 2005 winner Del Monte skipped the tournament. Gumlet, composed of former collegiate varsity players, brought the title in 2004 at the expense of Tangub.

FilSino Athletic Club president Joaquin Gochangco said Paulo Ariola will act as the tournament commissioner, with Edward Ma-apni serving as his assistant.

Games will be played during Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, Friday and Saturday, he added. *CIT
