Provincial Treasurer Danilo Mendez yesterday said he will be sending
personnel from his office to a town in Oriental Negros to investigate
its treasurer who reportedly failed to account for almost P1 million
in government funds.
Mendez, however, refused to divulge the name of the town and
the treasurer pending the result of their investigation, especially
that he does not have a copy of a report from the Commission on
Audit.
But Mendez said the town is in the northern part of the province.
He said the team will also try to figure out whether higher
municipal officials were involved in the irregularity, noting that
initial information reaching his office tend to incriminate a high
ranking official.
Mendez added that, having known personally the concerned municipal
treasurer, he cannot believe that the latter can do it single handedly.
He said his office can motu propio, or on its own, conduct
the investigation since municipal treasurers are under the supervision
of the provincial treasurer.*RA
