Negros athletes joining
national Prisaa Games

Majority of the Negros athletes who will see action for Western Visayas in the National Private Schools and Sports Association Games in Pangasinan are already sure to join the event, WV PRISAA athletic manager Roger Banzuela said yesterday.

A number of University of St. La Salle athletes, though, are still uncertain of their participation in the national tilt because they are the graduating students who will be having their examinations and some have academic problems, Banzuela said.

The La Sallians, who are set to banner five out of the nine Negros teams representing Region VI, are still negotiating with their teachers to have a chance to play during the national hostilities, Banzuela, who is also the USLS sports director, added.

The disciplines in the National PRISAA Games will be staged from Feb. 6 to 11 in the different venues in Dagupan City and Lingayen, Pangasinan.

La Salle is set to field its teams in women's volleyball, swimming and taekwondo, and men's sepak takraw and lawn tennis, while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will represent the men and women's table tennis squads.

Negros' men's basketball team is composed of stalwarts from the West Negros College and UNO-R, while the men's chess squad will be composed of the Wesnecan woodpushers. The Recoletos will also have some of its lady tankers in the Region VI women's swimming team.

UNO-R sports director Ericson Rios said his athletes have no problem with the schedule because their examinations will end on Feb. 3, the same day that the Region VI delegation will leave Bacolod City for the games.

The Negros booters are also supposed to banner the Region VI men's football squad, but the sports has not been included in the calendar of events, Banzuela said.

Negros brought home its second consecutive overall championship in the Regional PRISAA Games in Bacolod City last month after bagging 10 team titles.

The Region VI delegation claimed the overall crown of the National PRISAA Games in Zamboanga City last year. *CIT
