Bishops won't back
ConAss, Navarra says
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The bishops will not favor a Constituent Assembly and will always protest against what will be adverse for the good of the country, Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra said yesterday.

Navarra, who is attending the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines meeting in Manila on Jan. 23, said all the bishops understand that the Constituent Assembly is not favorable to the people.

He said that during the conference in Manila, they will discuss urgent issues about the situation in the Philippines.

Navarra asked Negrenses to say special prayers for all the Bishops gathered at the meeting, in order that they will be able to analyze the situation well and be able to come up with a decision or statement that will really be of great help in solving the problems of the country.

Charter Change will be included in the discussions of the bishops and that is why he believes an inter-faith Prayer Explosion scheduled in Bacolod City on Jan. 25 will be of great help in making the people in Negros aware of the importance of issues, where the future of our country is at stake, Navarra said.

The bishops may also include in their discussion the "Garci tapes" controversy because the people are asking for the truth to come out, he added.

Navarra said that through the initiatives of the new CBCP president, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, they held consultations with the different sectors of society.

"For sure we will be consulting with the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines" to shed more light on the problems of the country, he said.*CGS
