Palaban Games
'06 draw 1,000 athletes

About 1,000 athletes are expected to see action in the 2006 Palaro Ng Mga Batang Negros at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City, from April 22 to May 1.

The competitors from the different cities and towns in Negros Occidental will be vying for the titles in athletics, boxing, taekwondo and the Mambukal race, Manuela de Oro, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Sports and Development Office, said.

De Oro said he also plans to include table tennis, swimming and chess in the calendar of events if the budget will be increased when the Panaad Executive Committee meets today.

WV Prisaa contingent
finalization set tomorrow

The board members and coaches of the Western Visayas Private Schools and Athletics Association will meet in Iloilo City tomorrow to finalize the Region VI delegation that will vie for the overall title of the National PRISAA Games in Lingayen, Pangasinan from Feb. 6 to 11.

The meeting will confirm the roster of athletes that will represent Western Visayas in the national event as some members of the contingent might back out because of conflict in schedule, Roger Banzuela, athletic manager of the WV PRISAA, said. The University of St. La Salle standouts, who are set to banner five out of the nine Negros teams representing Region VI, might withdraw from the hostilities because the games will coincide with their examination week, Banzuela, who is also the USLS sports director, said.

NBA tourney moved to February

The staging of the Negros Basketball Association-Mayor's Cup at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School has been moved to the third week of February instead of this month.

NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon said his association postponed the hosting of the tournament because the group has yet to meet with Mayor Evelio Leonardia to discuss the basketball event.

Leonardia is currently in the United States for some official business and to witness the rematch between Bacolod City's adopted son Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales.
