NBA tourney moved to February

The staging of the Negros Basketball Association-Mayor's Cup at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School has been moved to the third week of February instead of this month.

NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon said his association postponed the hosting of the tournament because the group has yet to meet with Mayor Evelio Leonardia to discuss the basketball event.

Leonardia is currently in the United States for some official business and to witness the rematch between Bacolod City's adopted son Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales.

Bascon said that the NBA also re-scheduled the tournament because Negros Occidental, one of the teams that will be vying for the crown, will represent Western Visayas in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association games in Lingayen, Pangasinan, from Feb. 6 to 11. The Elvis Atinado-mentored Negrense stalwarts consist of a selection of players from the seven-time defending NOPSSCEA champion West Negros College and last year's runner-up University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

The members of the NBA will meet this week to finalize the date of the cagefest, before presenting it to Leonardia, Bascon said.

Aside from Negros, teams eyeing for the championship are reigning titlist Toyota Warriors of Iloilo, Your Basketball Athletic Club-Emarken and Tribu Sugbu of Cebu.

The tournament will adopt a single round-robin format with the top two teams advancing into the championship showdown, organizers said.*CIT
