The board members and coaches of the Western Visayas Private Schools
and Athletics Association will meet in Iloilo City tomorrow to finalize
the Region VI delegation that will vie for the overall title of
the National PRISAA Games in Lingayen, Pangasinan from Feb. 6 to
11.
The meeting will confirm the roster of athletes that will
represent Western Visayas in the national event as some members
of the contingent might back out because of conflict in schedule,
Roger Banzuela, athletic manager of the WV PRISAA, said. The University
of St. La Salle standouts, who are set to banner five out of the
nine Negros teams representing Region VI, might withdraw from the
hostilities because the games will coincide with their examination
week, Banzuela, who is also the USLS sports director, said.
La Salle is set to field its teams in women's volleyball,
swimming and taekwondo, and men's sepak takraw and lawn tennis,
while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will represent
the men and women's table tennis squads.
Negros' men's basketball team is composed of stalwarts from
the West Negros College and UNO-R, while the men's chess squad will
be composed of the Wesnecan woodpushers.
UNO-R will also have some of its lady tankers in the Region
VI women's swimming team.
The Negros booters are also supposed to banner the Region
VI men's football squad, but the sports has not been included in
the calendar of events, Banzuela said.
The winning squads during the Regional PRISAA Games in Bacolod
City last month that will not be able to see action in the competitions
will be replaced by the runner-up teams, Banzuela, who also serves
as the chairman of the WV PRISAA technical committee, said.
Negros brought home its second consecutive overall crown
in the Regional PRISAA Games last month after bagging 10 team titles.
The Region VI delegation, who will be leaving on Feb. 3, also
claimed the overall championship of the National PRISAA Games in
Zamboanga City last year. *CIT
