The Confederation of Sugar Producers Association yesterday urged
the Sugar Board to convert "C" sugar to "B" or domestic sugar.
The CONFED unanimously passed a resolution during its National
Board of Trustees meeting Jan. 13, to call for the conversion, pointing
out that current market conditions make it unnecessary to hold such
sugar in reserve, Luis Tongoy, CONFED Negros chairman, said.
The additional cash flow could help the sugarcane farmers cope
with high costs of land preparation and planting during this critical
part of the planting season, the resolution said.
CONFED, after a lengthy discussion, also believes that releasing
the "C" sugar cannot significantly impact "B" sugar prices as it
is already factored in, Tongoy said.
Tongoy said that the three weeks' supply of "C" sugar is approximately
40,000 MT.*
