protest Jan. 20

Signaling the start of renewed protest actions against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, cause-oriented groups are preparing to hold a rally on Jan. 20, the fifth anniversary of the EDSA People Power 2 uprising.

Charter Change, the "opportunism of GMA" after EDSA 2, and her maneuvers to stay in power will be key issues in the protest rally to be held in downtown Bacolod, a Bayan press release said yesterday.

More than a thousand are expected to join the first major mass action for the year. The protest will also serve as a commemoration of the Mendiola Massacre of Jan. 22, 1987, the press release said.

BAYAN believes that charter change under the proposal of ConCom and its current form and directions will make the Constitution worse, the press release said.

BAYAN called on the people to join in its crusade to oppose Charter change and the Arroyo maneuvers to stay in power.*
