POC hit for focusing
more on SEAG woes

MANILA --- The successful hosting of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games and victorious campaign of the Philippines should be given more importance than the problems encountered in the biennial meet, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella yesterday said.

"What is important is that the Games went smoothly and we became champions for the first time in history," Puentevella, co-chairman of the Bacolod Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee, told the DAILY STAR in reaction to the comments made by Philippine Olympic Committee Jose "Peping" Cojuangco.

Education grabs third
straight cheering title

The College of Education brought home its third consecutive cheering crown at the start of the University of St. La Salle Sportsfest 2006 at the USLS Coliseum in Bacolod City yesterday.

The Education cheerers gave their department an early head start in the race for the overall championship by posting 60 points with the victory. Aside from the grandslam, Education also snared the Best T-shirt Design award.

The College of Nursing finished first runner-up for 40 points, while former champion College of Arts and Sciences settled for second runner-up to register 30 markers.

NOVA tourney to
draw big field

About 56 squads are expected to see action in the 16th Annual Negros Occidental Volleyball Association-NOCSF Age-Group Volleyball Championships from Feb. 11 to March 25 at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court in Bacolod City.

The teams will be vying for the championships in the 10-Under, 12-Under, 14-Under and 16-Under divisions.

NOVA president Roger Banzuela said the 16-Under girls' competitions will also serve as the elimination round of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball Invitational League in Bacolod.
