Beach volley association
eyes formal organization

A formal organization of the Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines is being mulled by sport's officials, an official of the Philippine Volleyball Federation said yesterday.

A referees' call for beach volleyball will be conducted at the La Salle Greenhills from Feb. 22 to 26 to finalize the organization of the BVAP, PVF president Roger Banzuela said.

The Philippines brought home a bronze medal in the beach volleyball tournament of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Bacolod City last month courtesy of Filipino-Americans Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua.

Banzuela said the organization of a beach volleyball association aims at fostering the sport in the Philippines since many local spikers have the chance to become competitive internationally.

Before the country's participation in the beach volleyball hostilities last year, the Philippine Team last fielded its men and women's beach volleyball squads in the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, where both squads placed fourth runner-up.

Meanwhile, Banzuela said that inter-secondary and inter-collegiate indoor volleyball tournaments will be staged in February and April, respectively, in Manila.

The PVF is also looking for means to pay its $100,000 or P5.3 million debt to the international volleyball federation or FIVB, he added. *CIT
