COMELEC in NegOr
gears for 2007 election

Election officers all over Oriental Negros were told to continue with their usual activities in preparation for the scheduled local elections in 2007.

While there is no certainty as to the holding of the local polls next year, Regional Commission on Election supervisor Manuel Advincula said, under the law, it is scheduled in October 2007.

In this connection, provincial election officers throughout Region 7 or Central Visayas will be holding a planning workshop to discuss the perennial problems during elections.

Recently, Advincula had informed the public that the four field offices of the COMELEC have been filled up with election assistants, including those for the towns of Pamplona, Basay, Zamboanguita and Bayawan City.

Meanwhile, Valencia Mayor Rodolfo Gonzalez said he does not favor the holding of the 2007 election. He further said politicians would be "hypocrites" if they are for the elections in October next year.

Gonzalez said elections are too divisive, and the country cannot afford too many elections.

"We need to roll out our sleeves and buckle down to work," Gonzalez said as he also called on incumbent chief executives to resign, if they don't want a postponement of the local polls.*JG
