'Bar drug personalities
from visiting inmates'

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete City, is considering the idea of not allowing known drug personalities to visit their friends in the jail.

Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz made the suggestion during the courtesy call of city BJMP warden, Maj. Waldimar Villanueva, at the provincial capitol Monday.

The governor pointed out this is in line with the no-nonsense drive against illegal drugs. Arnaiz noted that on several occasions, prohibited drugs had found their way into the BJMP compound in Bajumpandan and in jails in the province.

This happens when drug personalities are allowed to visit some prisoners in the facilities, he said. In Bajumpandan, a number of suspects were caught bringing shabu into the jail.

Meanwhile, the Regional Peace and Order Council will convene this weekend in Cebu City.

Tasked by the governor to attend the regional peace and order meeting is Board Member Arturo Umbac Jr., chairman of the Human Rights, Peace and Order committee of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Umbac said they are expected to hear reports from different law enforcement agencies, especially on the anti-terrorism campaign, insurgency updates, proliferation of illegal drugs and other crimes.*JG
