The week-long Scholastic Book Fair that opened Monday
at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School in Bacolod City is still ongoing
at the canteen entrance lobby of the school.
The event was the first ever held by Scholastic,
the publisher of the Harry Potter series and its latest hit, Chronicles
of Narnia, in Western Visayas, a press release from the BTTHS said.
A wide range of book titles for all ages including
teachers' references is on offer, Gil Severino, head of the English
Studies of BTTHS, said in the press release.

Nihongo
contest 2006 set
The Japan Foundation, Manila announced that it will
hold the 2006 Nihongo Speech Contest, 2 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Cinema
3, 7/L Shangri-la Plaza Mall, EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong
City.
The contest, now on its 33rd year, is a major
event in celebration of the Philippines-Japan Friendship Year in
commemoration of the 50 years of diplomatic relations between them,
a press release from JFM said.
Eligible to join are students and professionals
who should demonstrate their linguistic skills by articulating an
original composition they have written on their chosen theme, the
press release said.
Winners will take part in an all-expense-paid
week-long study tour in Japan while all qualified contestants will
receive consolation prizes.
The deadline for submission of duly-accomplished
application forms with a written copy and a recording of the speech
entries will be held Feb. 1.
Supporting the project are various Filipino and
Japanese organizations, the Embassy of Japan, resident Japanese
business community and Shangri-la Plaza Mall.
