70-year-old farmer
knifed dead by four

A 70-year-old farmer who had helped four unidentified men find their way ended up hacked to death late Sunday night in Brgy. Maluay, Zamboanguita, about 24 kilometers south of Dumaguete City, in Oriental Negros.

Police yesterday identified the victim as Pedro dela Peņa, married, a farmer from Sitio Jawa, Maluay.

The report said dela Peņa and his wife, Matilde, were resting after having dinner when, at about 10 p.m., the four men knocked on their door and requested the victim to guide them to the road.

Matilde told investigators that, despite the lateness of the hour, her husband went out to help the suspects.

However, about 50 meters away from the house, one of the four men attacked the farmer with a bolo, wounding him on the base of his head and causing him to fall into the ground.

The attacker continued hacking the downed farmer and was later joined by his three companions in stabbing the farmer's abdomen that resulted in his death.

Witnesses said the four men fled in the north direction after the killing.*
