Reg'l Palaro set in March

The staging of the 2006 edition of the Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet has been moved from April to March 12 to 18 in Roxas City, Capiz, an official of the Department of Education said yesterday.

The hosting of the competitions has been re-scheduled because it will be difficult to assign teachers responsibilities in April which is already their summer break, Dr. Eden Deriada, chief of the DepEd Physical Education and School Sports Division for Region VI, told the DAILY STAR.

Some of the athletes may also take their vacations in April and it would be inappropriate for coaches to organize their competitors for the regional event, Deriada said.

Juvic stays in
contention for 'Tour' spot

Negrense hotshot Juvic Pagunsan shot a 71 yesterday in the first round morning session of the Asian Tour Qualifying School final stage at the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club's Allamanda Course in Senai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The 71 placed Pagunsan in an 11-player logjam at 28th place as the Southeast Asian Games gold medalist stayed in contention for the 40 tour cards at stake in the qualifying event. Also firing a 71 was Filipino Benjie Magada.

All 217 players will have to play both the Allamanda and Cempaka courses and only the top 100 and ties after round two make it to the third round on Friday.

Tanpinco in Top 10
of RP Ladies tilt

Bacolod standouts Anya Tanpinco and Mia Piccio remained within striking distance of the leaders, after opening their RP Ladies Open bids with 75 and 79, respectively at the Manila Golf Club.

Tanpinco, a silver medalist in the team event in the Southeast Asian Games, trails overnight leader and fellow RP Team member Frances Bondad by four strokes in the three-day event.

Bondad, a Fil-Australian, who ruled this event two years ago shot an even par 71 with veteran Lora Roberto among her closest pursuers with a 1-over 72.
