The yearly "The Outstanding Students" search was
launched recently by the Junior Chamber International Bacolod, a
press release from the group said yesterday.
Now on its 37th year, the THOS seeks to recognize
high school and college student leaders in Negros Occidental. Selection
is based on the nominees' leadership potentials, character, and
academic excellence, the press release said.
Scrapbooks of previous years are now being displayed
at the JC Martin Business Center at Door 116, Ground Floor, VSB
Bldg., Corner 6th - Lacson Streets, Bacolod City, it said.
Deadline for submission of nominations and scrapbooks
is Feb. 10 while the preliminary and final interviews are tentatively
scheduled on Feb. 18 and 25, respectively.

conducts tree-planting
Members of the Higashimaya International Volunteers
Action Club from Japan held a tree-planting activity at their project
site in Sitio Balicaocao, Brgy. Orong, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental,
during their recent visit to the province.
A different set of members visit the city every
year.
The group, which started their project in Kabankalan
in 1996, was composed of 18 members, five of them high school students.
They were led by Tomiko Suzuki, a press release from the Kabankalan
government said yesterday.
Other places they visited in Kabankalan were
the SONEDCO Sugar Central and the Salong National High School where
they donated P5,000 for school projects.
Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr. and wife Dottie, Vice Mayor
Raul Rivera and Councilor Mamerto Mayoga Jr. accompanied them.
They also went to the Punta Bulata Beach Resort in
Cauayan town, Guintubdan Falls in La Carlota City, OISCA site in
Bago City, and St. Mary's Home for the Aged and Boys Home, the press

Overflow bridge
inaugurated in Isabela
The inauguration of the Camang-Camang overflow bridge
in Isabela, Negros Occidental was led recently by Rep. Ignacio Arroyo
Jr. (5th District, Neg. Occ.) who said cooperation among local officials
is needed for development.
The project will link Barangay Camang-Camang
to the poblacion, Isabela, a press release from Arroyo's office
said.
The project was funded by Arroyo's Congressional
Initiative Allocation of P2.5 million, and by the Department of
Agrarian Reform and the Isabela government, a press release from
his office said yesterday. With Arroyo at the inauguration were
Isabela Mayor Renato Malabor, Vice Mayor Melvin Ibanez, Sangguniang
Bayan members and Local Water Utilities Administration director
Leonard Matti.
Arroyo and Malabor also later inaugurated the meat
section of the Isabela market, the press release added.*
