'Bus firm not defying ordinance'

An official of Vallacar Transit has denied that the firm is defying the provisions of a city ordinance creating the Integrated Southbound Terminal in Barangay Bagacay, Dumaguete City.

VT Operations manager, Sammy Gargaritano, during his appearance at the city council session Thursday, also asked for one month to prepare a portion of the Vallacar transit property in Bagacay, a few meters from the designated terminal, as pre-departure area for their buses going south and vice versa.

Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices said he understands the predicament of small public utility jeepneys plying the Dumaguete-Siaton route as well as the pedestrians, including students.

However, he said he has to implement the ordinance, which he inherited from the former administration, or be sued in court by terminal owners who signed a memorandum of agreement with the city during the stint of former Mayor Felipe Remollo.

Perdices added that, no terminal in the entire country is allowed to operate within the poblacion area anymore.

Meanwhile, VT announced that it will operate shortly another terminal for its smaller units in Barangay Bagacay, a few meters away from the designated one.

Gargaritano said that their company has infused millions of pesos in developing their present terminal in Calindagan, to improve their services and for the convenience of their patrons. It would not be that easy to immediately remove their present terminal from the city proper, he added.*
