NBI probe not wanted

Karapatan does not want the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the disappearance of National Federation of Sugarcane Workers organizer Perseus Geagoni, NBI Bacolod chief Philip Pecache said yesterday.

Gov. Joseph Maraņon had earlier referred the case of Geagoni to the NBI when his relatives sought his help on his disappearance.

Maraņon yesterday said he was waiting for the NBI report on the matter and if the family of Geogani does not want the NBI to conduct the investigation, that is okay with him.

Pecache said no formal complaint on the disappearance of Geagoni was filed before the NBI.

Pecache said that when he informed the Karapatan representatives who met him, that the NBI needs to know the background to determine why Geogani disappeared, they said they would conduct the investigation themselves.

We also asked them for affidavits and not just fact sheets, which are required in an investigation, he said.

However, they said they do not want the NBI to conduct the investigation, Pecache said.

Because of this we have adopted a hands-off policy on the case but have not closed our doors to helping if they seek our assistance, he said.

Geagoni, 42, of Brgy. Zone 4, Talisay City, was reported missing since Dec. 5 by his family and relatives.

The Negros Occidental Provincial Peace and Order Council is also set to investigate his disappearance.*
