Sexagenarian knifed dead
BY RENE GENOVE

A sexagenarian was stabbed dead by five men on New Year's Eve in a videoke bar along Exodus Avenue in Brgy. Panubigon, Canlaon City, Oriental Negros.

Police yesterday identified the victim as Quirico Ponting, 67, married, of Ramroad, Brgy. Mabigo, in Canlaon.

His death was one of only two killings reported by the police on New Year's eve. The number of those wounded all over the province still remains at eight.

Negrense SEAG medalists
cited, get cash incentives

Philippine athletes from Oriental Negros who won medals in the recent 23rd Southeast Asian Games held in the country were given cash incentives and recognition by the provincial government yesterday, at the Capitol grounds in Dumaguete City.

The province gave cash incentives through Gov. George Arnaiz to the first gold medalist of the SEAGames, Maristela Torres, who hails from San Jose, Oriental Negros, in the individual long jump.

She received P20,000; a total of P25,000 for Jennifer Chan who won gold and silver medals in the archery compound team and individual events; P15,000 for Joan Chan, also for a gold medal in archery compound team event, along with Mark Javier who also received P15,000.

Mayors try to beat deadline
on farm-to-market proposals

Gov. George Arnaiz called an emergency meeting yesterday of all mayors in Oriental Negros to catch up with the deadline for submitting their proposals for the opening of farm-to-market roads.

District engineer Rodrigo Catapusan of the Department of Public Works and Highways said that each local government had a share of P2 million from the P37 billion interest savings of national government debts due to the strengthening of the peso.

President Gloria Arroyo had ordered that the amount be distributed to all LGUs in opening new farm to market roads, he said.
