Eight people, one of them a resident of Negros Occidental, were wounded in separate hacking, stabbing and shooting incidents in Oriental Negros on New Year's eve.

Of those injured, four were victims of hacking in Dumaguete City, another was knifed in Mabinay town, and three were treated for gunshot wounds in Canlaon City.

In Dumaguete, the first stabbing incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Dec. 31, at Habitat 1, Brgy. Bajumpandan when Kurt Sajulla, 18, of Bajumpandan allegedly hacked Carmelito Barrera, 47, married, with a samurai.

Avian flu task force to
conduct massive information campaign

The information component of the Provincial Task Force Avian Flu in Oriental Negros will conduct a massive information campaign beginning this month.

Task Force action officer, Antonio Mutia, told the DAILY STAR that the move is necessary to educate the people on what to do in case the dreaded bird flu virus finds its way into the province, and also to give them the correct information.

Mutia, concurrent provincial veterinarian, said the task force is taking the threat of avian flu very seriously, especially that the human death toll due to bird flu infection worldwide has risen to 71.

Guv -- New TF to
focus on snatching

In view of the rising incidence of criminality in Dumaguete City and Sibulan town, Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz is proposing the creation of a crime task force to be patterned after the successful Task Force 24, which is gaining headway in the campaign against drug personalities in the city and province.

Arnaiz told the DAILY STAR that, like the Task Force 24, the proposed crime task force will be composed of selected members of the different law enforcement agencies.

He said it will be created under the direction of the newly assigned Philippine National Police provincial director Senior Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe.
