BY RENE GENOVE

Eight people, one of them a resident of Negros Occidental, were wounded in separate hacking, stabbing and shooting incidents in Oriental Negros on New Year's eve.

Of those injured, four were victims of hacking in Dumaguete City, another was knifed in Mabinay town, and three were treated for gunshot wounds in Canlaon City.

In Dumaguete, the first stabbing incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Dec. 31, at Habitat 1, Brgy. Bajumpandan when Kurt Sajulla, 18, of Bajumpandan allegedly hacked Carmelito Barrera, 47, married, with a samurai.

Earlier, Sajulla was walking with an unidentified companion who was shouting when Barrera accosted them, SPO1 Jonathan Vailoces, police investigator, said.

Sajulla then went home and returned minutes later with a samurai, and on seeing Barrera, hacked him in the head, left hand and face, police reports said.

The siblings of Sajulla -- Raul and Cristy -- tried to stop the suspect, but they too, were attacked and wounded in different parts of their body.

Sajulla fled while the victims were rushed to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete.

Still in Dumaguete, a hacking suspect surrendered to the police after wounding his victim at about 4 p.m., Dec. 31, at Purok Alcafon, Alcancia Street, Brgy. Camanjac.

Constantino Pinili, 45, married, of Camanjac, said he was walking when he met Teodoro Catan, Jr., 25, single, who was reportedly under the influence of liquor, and who was carrying two scythes.

He said he hacked Catan who, he claimed, suddenly attacked him first. Pinili admitted that he and Catan had personal grudges.

SPO4 Canuto Balneg, Investigations section chief, said Pinili will be charged with frustrated murder.

In Mabinay town, Oriental Negros, a 21-year-old man from Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, who is working in a carnival in the town, ended up in the hospital when he was stabbed about ten minutes before the New Year.

Police identified him as Raffy Pacheco, single, who works with the Lecian Carnival in Brgy. Poblacion, Mabinay. Pacheco said he just went outside the carnival site to buy cigarets when the suspect, Bergin Villaflor, married, of Brgy. Bulibulihan, Mabinay suddenly approached and stabbed him with a knife.

Pacheco, who was hit in the chest and arm was rushed to the Mabinay Medicare Hospital while Villaflor immediately fled.

Meanwhile, two men and a woman landed in the San Carlos City District Hospital in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, when they were fired at by still unidentified gunmen at about 9 p.m. on New Year's eve. The victims were Rolando Egay, 30, married, Dindo Baler, 34, single, and Gina Mae Calanrianes, 22, single, all of Sitio Tigbahi, Brgy. Bayog, Canlaon City.
