West Negros seeks
revenge versus UPH
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

West Negros College seeks its revenge against University of Perpetual Help Altas when they collide at 9:30 a.m. today in the 60th National Students Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships at the ICR Gym in Bicol.

The Mustangs, who brought home the NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball tournament for seven consecutive years, were eliminated by UPH in the national tournament last year in the quarterfinals.

WNC mentor Elvis Atinado, who guided the Wesnecans to their first national crown by ruling the National University Games basketball competitions last year, last night said he still does not know what to expect because it is their first game.

"I still do not have any expectations because it's our first game in the eliminations, but the I'm confident that the boys will play well," Atinado told the DAILY STAR.

West Negros delegation head Rico Perez expressed optimism that the Mustangs, who have dominated the local basketball tournaments, will have its payback against their Altas rivals.

"We gave them (UPH) a good fight last year. I expect the players to deliver tomorrow (today) and have their payback," Perez said.

Atinado said he is counting on his mainstays Stanley Tizon, Severino Baclao, Sonny Abaring, Ely Olarte and Vengie Vergara to spearhead the Mustangs' championship bid in the tournament.

The five standouts --- Tizon, Baclao, Abaring, Olarte and Vergara --- also led the Western Visayas men's basketball squad that finished third in the National PRISAA Games in Pangasinan recently after bowing to powerhouse National Capital Region, bannered by University of Sto. Tomas cagers, in the semifinals.*CIT
