Guards Peewee Demonteverde and Mark Binguan came up with big plays
down the stretch as New ST Bacolod Marketing beat Probac, 102-92,
Saturday night to claim the top spot in Bracket B of the 6th Tan
Kek Pin Memorial Cup at the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.
Demonteverde scored 26 points, including 16 in the final period,
while Binguan sealed the win by nailing four straight free throws
as New ST took a twice-to-beat advantage in the second phase of
the quarterfinals. It was New ST's sixth straight victory, after
dropping a tough triple-overtime loss to Krua Thai-Ice Monster in
its opening assignment.
Talisay Basketball Athletic Club came from behind to trip Panasonic
Po's, 106-100, Friday night to gain the No. 1 ranking in Bracket
A, while Mambukal Summer Resort ended its elimination-round campaign
with a 6-1 slate, following a 115-88 crushing of RG Purefoods.
Binguan opened the fourth period with back-to-back triples
to give ST a 74-71 cushion, before Demonteverde mocked Probac's
man-to-man defense to further pad the lead.
The New ST attack gathered much steam that in a stretch of
five plays, ST either nailed a triple or made a three-point play,
while YBAC only responded with 2 points in each possession.
Probac actually took a 67-57 lead with 3:30 left in the third
period, before ST rallied behind Mark Sabusap and Jun Luciano.
Binguan finished with 16 points, while Sabusap added 12. Te Espejo
contributed 9 and Simon Guevarra posted 8. Tupas led Probac with
17 and Popoy Jamero added 11.*CPT
