Criminal gang neutralized
The police yesterday said it has neutralized a criminal
gang that is being blamed for the series of robbery incidents in
San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
Supt. Ricardo de la Cruz said this resulted from
the arrest of eight of the gang members identified as John Mardi
Pasilan, Winston Gadiane, Elmer Hermo, Allan Gamboa, Reynante Lopez,
Edmaylito Ortega and a 16-year-old whose identity is being withheld
by the DAILY STAR.
De la Paz who was re-designated as police chief
of San Carlos on Feb. 22, said the group victimized Hacienda Basconia
owned by the Ledesma Group of Companies, the City Hall Women's building
and Games Guro Internet Café, among others.
Police investigations show that two cameras
were taken by the suspects from the Women's building while P5,000
worth of game cards were stolen from the internet café.
Meanwhile, a generator engine motor allegedly
stolen by the group from Hacienda Bosconia was recovered from the
six suspects who were separately arrested between Feb. 24 and 26
in San Carlos City.
Upon his re-assumption of the San Carlos City
police command last week, De la Paz was immediately ordered by Mayor
Eugenio Jose Lacson to focus his campaign against the apparent rising
incidents of robbery.
De la Paz has formed a task force aimed at addressing
crimes against property in San Carlos City.
De la Paz said they are now coordinating with complainants
in the filing of cases against the six arrested suspects today.*GPB

2 NPA fighters
surrender
Two self-confessed New People's Army fighters yesterday
gave themselves up to Lt. Col. Norman Flores, 61st Infantry Battalion
commander, and surrendered two firearms.
The military, however, withheld their identities
while they undergo debriefing, and for security reasons.
Flores said the two NPA guerillas confessed to
have lost the will to fight against the government, and now want
to live a normal life and re-unite with their respective families.
Flores added that he will recommend the giving
of amnesty to the two returnees, and help them to avail of the Balik-Baril
program of the government. The Army's 3rd Infantry Division had
earlier announced that it will increase the cash value of firearms
surrendered by members and sympathizers of the New People's Army
by 100 percent.
Maj. Lyndon Sollesta, Army regional spokesman,
said rebels who surrender either an M-16 or M-14 assault rifle,
will receive P35,000, previously pegged at only P18,000, under the
government's Balik Baril program.
Two high-powered firearms, an M-16 and M1
garand rifles, had also been recovered recently by the 61st IB in
Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, and in Santa Catalina, Oriental
Negros.
Sollesta said the Balik Baril program aims at
providing financial assistance to rebel returnees who wish to surrender
and avail of the amnesty program of the government, he said.
Under the program, a rebel returnee who surrenders
an M-60 machine gun will be paid P60,000, Sollesta who is also the
commander of Army Civil Military Operations Unit in Visayas, said.*GPB
