SEMIS CLASH WITH ILOILO UP
BY CEDELF TUPAS

ILOILO CITY --- With its team already assured of a semifinal berth, the Negros Occidental coaching staff tinkered with its line-up and nearly paid dearly for the move.

But thanks to two brilliant second half goals by Arnie Pasinabo, the Negrenses kept their unbeaten record intact with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Northern Cotabato yesterday in the PFF-National Men's Open Football Championships at the slippery La Paz pitch here.

More importantly, the win avoided a semifinal confrontation with titleholders NCR but nevertheless, the Negrenses face a tall order of beating host Team Biscocho House-Iloilo for a place in the finals tomorrow.

Scientific training
for athletes pushed

BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Members of the Negros elementary and secondary athletics squads who will see action in the Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet in Roxas City , Capiz need a scientific training approach to win consistently, an official of the delegation said yesterday.

"More or less the other teams joining the regional meet are practicing the way Negros athletics squads do, but our players really need a scientific approach to excel in the sport," Manuel De Oro, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Sports and Development Office, told the DAILY STAR.

De Oro, who heads the training staff of the Negros athletics teams, said the scientific approach will be applied starting next year because of insufficient time as the regional school-based hostilities had already been slated March 16 to 20.

BY CEDELF TUPAS

New ST Marketing pounced on a shorthanded Magnolia Nutri-oil squad in the third period en route to a 103-89 win Wednesday night in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

Magnolia played with only four players in a three-minute span in the third quarter and New ST turned a 58-60 deficit to a 71-60 lead with Te Espejo scoring 19 points that ignited the breakaway.

The loss proved to be decisive for Magnolia, which dropped to 5-2, and allowed New ST to take the solo lead in Bracket B with a 5-1 slate.
