ST cagers bring
down Magnolia
BY CEDELF TUPAS

New ST Marketing pounced on a shorthanded Magnolia Nutri-oil squad in the third period en route to a 103-89 win Wednesday night in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

Magnolia played with only four players in a three-minute span in the third quarter and New ST turned a 58-60 deficit to a 71-60 lead with Te Espejo scoring 19 points that ignited the breakaway.

The loss proved to be decisive for Magnolia, which dropped to 5-2, and allowed New ST to take the solo lead in Bracket B with a 5-1 slate.

New ST cagers only need to win tomorrow against Probac(4-2) to avoid a possible five-team tie at first place among Probac, BBC, Magnolia and Krua Thai/Ice Monster.

In the first game, Mambukal Resort won by forfeiture over YBAC and finished the elimination with six wins against a single loss, enough to secure them the second spot in Bracket A behind Talisay Basketball Athletic Club.

A cut on the brow of Magnolia point guard Mark Descutido in the middle of third frame forced him to seek treatment, leaving his team with only four players.

Behind Peewee Demonteverde and Mark Sabusap, New ST finished off Magnolia in the fourth quarter. Hastening Magnolia's defeat was the absence of 2005 MVP Warren Alintano and key free throw misses in the final period.

Demonteverde and Espejo finished with 21 points apiece, while Mark Binguan and Sabusap added 15 and 12, respectively.

Magnolia was led by Jojo San Miguel with 13 points, while Dennis Dinsay added 11. Joel Lim and Ryan Seares contributed 10 apiece. *CPT
