Members of the Negros elementary and secondary athletics squads
who will see action in the Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association
Meet in Roxas City , Capiz need a scientific training approach to
win consistently, an official of the delegation said yesterday.
"More or less the other teams joining the regional meet are
practicing the way Negros athletics squads do, but our players really
need a scientific approach to excel in the sport," Manuel De Oro,
officer-in-charge of the Provincial Sports and Development Office,
told the DAILY STAR.
De Oro, who heads the training staff of the Negros athletics
teams, said the scientific approach will be applied starting next
year because of insufficient time as the regional school-based hostilities
had already been slated March 16 to 20.
The scientific approach should be applied early 2007 because
there are many phases that need to be tackled in order to be successful
in the strategy, he said, adding that lack of manpower is also a
big reason why the approach was not practiced this year.
One trainer should only have four athletes under his supervision
in order to maximize the practices of his players, but what is happening
right now is there are at least six or seven athletes being handled
by each trainer, De Oro said.
He also said that the practices of the Negros student-athletes
joining the jumping events have been transferred to the Paglaum
Sports Complex because the Panaad Park and Stadium could not accommodate
all of the trainings of the track and field competitors at the same
time.
The Negros athletics squads is aiming to bring home three out
of the four team crowns up for grabs in the regional meet, he said.
Area IV, represented by standouts from La Carlota City, Pulupandan,
Bago City, San Enrique and Valladolid, claimed the team athletics
titles in the secondary boys and girls' and elementary girls', while
Area I topped the elementary boys' category in the Palarong Panlalawigan
in Bacolod City last December. *CIT
