'Don't take
advantage of disaster'

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia is asking the public to bring their donations for the survivors and residents of the massive landslide in St. Bernard town, Southern Leyte, directly to the Office of the Sectoral Concerns at the Bacolod Plaza.

At the same time, he warned the public from giving their donations just to any person or group who approach them and take advantage of the situation.

Leonardia said he has tasked the OSC to lead Task Force St. Bernard created by the city to campaign for assistance since there are many groups and establishments trying to raise funds to help the residents of the devastated village.

"We have solicited the assistance of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants because we want everything to be transparent and accounted for," Leonardia said.

We are also trying to negotiate with land and sea transportation companies to help transport the goods to Leyte, he said, adding that all those who have contributed will be acknowledged. He said the public may also call up the City Mayor's Office to give their donations.

Meanwhile, Crispin Chua of Amity said their group will send the relief goods to Leyte this week. He said Amity has received a total donation of P658,000. He said those interested to help can send their donation to the Amity Fire Station in Shopping, and requested that the check be payable to the Association of Philippine Volunteer Fire Brigades Inc.

Edyll Jun Tan of the Philippine National Red Cross said the Red Cross Youth members are also doing their share in helping the PNRC staff repack the relief goods for the Leyte residents after their classes.*CGS
