'A diamond birthday bash'

Our dear friend Perla "Ducky" Leonardia was honored during her "diamond" birthday last Monday with a bang by her big family and close friends. It was an evening of love for this exceptional lady who has touched the lives of so many people.

Sugarland Hotel's Sampaguita Hall was lovingly decorated by her nieces and nephews who wanted to surprise their Tita Perla with an evening to remember. The center of attraction was the towering 5-tiered birthday cake which provided a unique setting for the stage. Guests raved over the centerpiece on each table - a miniature round aquarium with live gold fishes swimming amidst glittering faux pearls! (How's THAT for style!). The fish represented the celebrator's horoscope which is PISCES.

The celebrator arrived wearing an elegant pale gold long gown with a beaded collar, with sister Ninfa, looking as glamorous in a silver-gray and white attire. Everyone stood and sang "Happy Birthday" while Perla was greeted many happy returns with a kiss and a hug from all who love her. Guests enjoyed the to-die-for yummy buffet which was superbly executed by the hotel's chef. Each delectable dish was complemented by glasses of sparkling red wine which flowed all night. After the calorific desserts, emcee Lourdes Leonardia Batac, called on the Leonardia brothers: Cesar, Joe, Nene, Dan, Andy, Pros and the youngest, Mayor Bing, to say something about their eldest sister. Each one gallantly gave a pink rose to the blushing celebrator. Cesar became a bit emotional as he narrated how their two sisters devoted their lives for their siblings.

The mood lightened when the other brothers gave some funny insights about their beloved sis, who they declared, was now the family "matriarch" since their mother has passed away. Ninfa naughtily revealed how forgetful Perla has become at times (!) and in the end, she expressed their feelings of love and admiration for a sister who has always been there for everyone.

There were musical numbers from the numerous members of the "clan" with the littlest ones stealing the show amidst thunderous applause. But the most enjoyable part of the program was the sing-a-long where previously undiscovered "talents" were revealed. Balikbayan Dr. Rudy Patiņo was a revelation as he sang his heart out. Not to be outdone was Vic Tan, hubby of cousin Melba Leonardia, now back in Bacolod after long years in Cebu.

We had a fabulous time listening to the other performers who sang until late. Mayor Bing of course, had to sing a song for his Manang and did his own version of "What a wonderful world" ala Louis Armstrong. One could see how close-knit and supportive this wonderful family is of each other. To our beloved Ducky, may you have many more happy, healthy and wealthy years to come - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!*
