Village chief escapes
police raid vs. 'tigbakay'
BY RENE GENOVE

A suspected gambler was arrested but his colleagues, including a barangay captain, escaped during a raid by the Dumaguete City Philippine National Police of an illegal cockfight late Monday afternoon in Brgy. Poblacion 9, Tanjay City, Oriental Negros.

PO2 Dominador Macay, head of the raiding team, identified the arrested man as Rafael Gayo, 51, of Poblacion 2 and the official as Jose Cabrera, barangay captain of Poblacion 9, believed to be the organizer of the illegal cockfight locally known as "tigbakay."

During the raid, police confiscated a small wooden box containing more than P11,500 in bets.

Cockfights in Oriental Negros held outside a licensed cockpit are banned under a provincial ordinance that complements Presidential Decree No. 449, the anti-illegal cockfighting law.

Meanwhile, still in Tanjay City, a 27-year-old man died less than an hour after he was rushed to a hospital after a luxury van crashed into his motorcycle Saturday morning in Brgy. San Jose.

The victim was identified as Cromwel Aba, 27, single of Sitio Combado, Brgy. Calasgaan, Bais City and the driver of the Ford Explorer van as Marilun Padernos, 49, widower, of Sitio Kimba, Brgy. San Roque in Talisay City, Cebu.

Police reports said Padernos was driving south past 8 a.m. along the national highway in Sitio Sta. Theresa, San Jose when the van skidded, bumped into a concrete post, and hit Aba's motorcycle throwing the motorist off.

The driver has been placed under investigation.*RG
