Negros booters
blank Masbate
ILOILO, NCR ROUT DAY 1 RIVALS

ILOILO CITY --- A relentless offense turned out to be the best defense for Negros Occidental.

Playing together as a team for the first time, the Negrenses showed great cohesion, blanking Masbate, 5-0, for its initial win in the PFF National Men's Open Championships at the Central Philippine University pitch here.

"This is actually a warm-up for us. It's the first time this team has played together and I am happy with the result," NOFA XI mentor Freddie Lazarito told the DAILY STAR.

With the Negrenses controlling 80 percent of possession, Masbate hardly threatened and five different players scored for Negros in the one-sided victory, including Southeast Asian Games campaigner Jerome Orcullo, who played with great resolve at midfield and created the best scoring opportunities for his team.

Settle differences, solon
urges top POC leaders

BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Rep. Monico Puentevella yesterday called on Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco and POC chairman Robert Aventajado to settle their differences and unite for the good of the country's sports program.

"If the reports are true that they (Cojuangco and Aventajado) are having a feud, then it is time for them to unite for the benefit of Philippine sports," Puentevella, who is the vice-president of the POC, said.

The rift between the two POC ranking officials reportedly began after the country's hosting of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games as Aventajado, who is also the Philippine SEAG Organizing Committee chairman, allegedly failed to raise the expected revenues during the biennial meet.

The Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines will be formally organized during the National Beach Volleyball Referee Course Congress that begins today at the Pilapil Hall of La Salle Greenhills in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City.

Philippine Volleyball Federation president Roger Banzuela said the BVAP will be organized in the five-day congress that ends on Sunday because it is the only occasion where all the beach volleyball referees in the Philippines will be gathered.

Topics such as refereeing guidelines, the duties and responsibilities of referees and the scoring system of beach volleyball games will be tackled during the event, Banzuela said.
