ILOILO CITY --- Negros Occidental FA starts its quest of reclaiming the most prestigious crown in Philippine football today when it battles unheralded Masbate in the PFF-National Men's Open Championships here.

Powered by five former members of the Philippine Team, the NOFA goes into the 8:30 a.m. match against Masbate as the odds on favorite, after finishing second behind champion NCR in last year's tournament in Cagayan de Oro.

The match will be held simultaneously with the NCR-Baguio clash at the Barotac Nuevo pitch and the North Cotabato-Zambales encounter at the St. Barbara ballfield.

Rep. Monico Puentevella yesterday lamented the decision of First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo to withdraw his support from the Philippine Olympic Committee.

"The victims (of Arroyo's decision) will be the athletes and sports program of the country," Puentevella, who is the vice-president of the POC, told the DAILY STAR.

Arroyo, who asked big companies to adopt National Sports Associations and shoulder the athletes' training expenses for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in November and December last year, recently announced that he will severe his ties with sports after being criticized for his support for the Philippine Team.

The Provincial Sports and Development Office is looking for alternative billeting quarters for the Negrense athletes who will compete in the Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association Meet because the rooms at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City will not be enough once the rest of the contingent arrives on Sunday, PSDO officer-in-charge Manuel De Oro said yesterday.

De Oro said the management of Panaad, the billeting quarters of the regional meet-bound athletes, is also looking for solutions to provide enough accommodation facilities for all of the Negrense participants.

Around 500 athletes and officials are expected to be accommodated at Panaad, with players in the elementary and secondary athletics and volleyball teams already staying at the complex.
