TALISAY CITY --- James Robinson of New Zealand grabbed the limelight yesterday as he beat Filipino Glenn Aguilar for the professionals open crown in the first round of the Camel Supercross International Championship Series at the Talisay Stadium here.

Aguilar, a 2004 Asian supercross champion, however, drew first blood as he topped the professionals 125 cc division defeating Jovie Saulog and Kenneth San Andres, both of the Philippines, who finished second and third, respectively. Robinson placed fourth in the event.

After going neck-to-neck for the top honors, Robinson, a former international supercross winner, pulled away from Aguilar after the latter fell down in the last turn of the fourth lap.

The West Negros College junior boys' squad opened its bid with an 83-70 victory over Holy Child School of Davao yesterday in the Philippine Basketball Federation Inc. National Students Basketball Championships at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym in Taft Avenue.

After establishing a 23-18 lead at the end of the opening quarter, the Baby Mustangs relinquished their advantage in the second period to trail 46-51 at halftime before getting back on track in the third frame.

Led by the defense of Jophel Garrido in the shaded area, the WNC cagers forced their HCS rivals to turnovers in the third quarter that translated to easy baskets giving them a 67-60 buffer entering the payoff period.

Viloria decisions
foe, keeps WBC belt

His win may not be as big as Manny Pacquiao's but Filipino-American Brian Viloria certainly carried the Philippine flag high and bright yesterday when he retained his World Boxing Council light flyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Mexico's Jose Antonio Aguirre in Las Vegas.

It was Viloria's first defense of the title he won with a first-round knockout of Mexican Eric Ortiz in September. The win extends the winning streak of Filipino boxers over Mexicans and comes after Pacquiao's clinical conquest of Morales last month.

Nicknamed the Hawaiian Punch, Viloria, who grew up in Hawaii but spent part of his childhood in Narvacan, Ilocos, improved to 19-0 with 12 wins inside the distance.
