Bindoy watershed restricted
BY RENE GENOVE

Bindoy Mayor Valente Yap has prohibited any anti-environmental activities at the Anolod watershed that supplies the water needs of at least eight barangays in the town.

Yap stressed the need to protect the watershed to avoid experiences that have ravaged the area and threatened the water system of the place.

He cited the drying-off of Lake Mantahaw many years ago by treasure hunters who wanted to dig at its bed.

The mayor said that, to further protect the vital water source, he has recommended a P3 million reforestation project at the Anolod watershed.

The microwatershed project is already approved by the Regional Development Council and has been endorsed for funding, he said.

Five spring water sources within the almost denuded watershed supply the needs of the eight barangays.

Earlier, the Provincial Development Council released P500,000 and the municipal government, P250,000 for the project.

The mayor said that municipal revenue collections could also increase once the water system improved.

Before he assumed office, the town government collected only P80,000 annual local revenues. Today, the revenues have gone up to P1.8 million and he said he expects these to increase next year.*RG
