NFA stabilizes rice supply,
prices through outlets

The National Food Authority has accredited 26,112 individual rice retailers nationwide as of December last year, the NFA said in a press release. Of the number, 11,379 are located in markets.

NFA has deployed 236 units of rolling stores to sell NFA rice, sugar and other grocery items at subsidized prices, the press release said.

In 2005 alone, the NFA sold a total of 747,758 bags of rice through these rolling stores.

NFA rolling stores are being deployed in depressed communities nationwide to sell affordable rice and other basic commodities to the poor, the press release said.

Seventy-six stationary outlets were also put up in the 15 hotspot areas in Metro Manila.

The NFA has also established a total of 2,601 Bigasan ni Gloria sa Palengke outlets nationwide which exclusively sell NFA rice. A total of 7,282,591 bags of rice were sold through these outlets, the press release said.

Tindahan Natin outlets were also opened in poverty-stricken areas in Metro Manila which sell rice at P18 per kilogram and fortified noodles at P4.25 per pack, the press release added.*
