18-Under volleyball
event mulled

The staging of an 18-Under girls' volleyball tournament is being planned with the winner to representing Visayas in the Shakey's Girls Volleyball National Championships, Philippine Volleyball Federation president Roger Banzuela said yesterday.

The winner of the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association-NOCSF Age-Group Volleyball Championship 16-Under girls' category is supposed to banner Visayas in the national finals, but the organizers changed their requirements allowing players aging 18 years old and below to compete in the tournament, Banzuela, who is also the NOVA president, said.

Banzuela said he will meet or write to the different volleyball coaches in Bacolod City if they will agree to set an 18-Under girls' event to see action in the Shakey's national championships.

"It is quite awkward to stage an 18-Under tournament because the participants will most likely come from the collegiate level, but the coaches will still decide whether to hold it or not," he added.

If majority of the local mentors will not agree with the proposal of staging an 18-Under girls' volleyball competitions then the champion in the NOVA age-group tournament will represent Visayas in the national hostilities slated June 1 to 3, he said.

Shakey's tournament organizer Freddie Infante will plane in Bacolod City next week to meet with Banzuela and finalize the staging of the girls' volleyball competitions.

The Shakey's-sponsored tournaments will also be held in Iloilo, Cebu and Manila, with the winners of each regional leg having the right to compete in the national finals. *CIT
