Negrense pugilists Joan Tipon and Warlito Parreñas are among the three Filipino boxers seeing action for the Philippine Boxing Team in the Australian Tri-Nation slugfest that fired off in Melbourne, Australia yesterday.

The Talisay City-born Tipon, who claimed a gold medal in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Bacolod City last year, aims to rule the bantamweight division, while Warlito Parreñas, who hails from Cadiz City, is vying for the top honors in the flyweight category. Tipon, who is also the reigning Asian men's boxing champion, and Parreñas, bronze medallist during the biennial meet, is participating in the tournament with compatriot Albert Pabila.

Tipon, Parreñas and Pabila, who is seeing action in the light-flyweight division, is coached Elmer Pamisa in the tri-nation boxing competitions that also showcases the top pugilists from Croatia and host Australia.

The Filipino boxers grabbed eight gold medals --- four courtesy of the RP lady pugs spearheaded by Asian women's champion Mitchel Martinez of Bacolod and Bago City --- in the 2005 SEA Games to wrest the overall championship from powerhouse Thailand. *CIT
