Search and rescue called
off for 7 persons missing at sea

ILOILO CITY - The Coast Guard has called off search-and-rescue operations for the seven persons on board a motor banca that disappeared almost two weeks ago between the islands of Semirara and Boracay.

Capt. Arturo Olavario, Coast Guard commander in Western Visayas, said they are now gathering information on the islands in the area for any trace of the boat or its residents.

The outrigger boat "Nining" left Sibolon Island in Caluya town, Antique around 2 p.m. on Feb. 3 enroute to Brgy Sta. Teresa, Magsaysay town in Occidental Mindoro. It was expected to arrive by noon the next day but did not reach its destination.

The Coast Guard conducted aerial reconnaissance for six days covering an area around a hundred square miles. Patrol boats have also searched for the missing boat.

The area is known for its huge waves and strong winds especially during this season.

The seven persons who remain missing are Rudy Openia, 52; Bernardo Espena, 39; Wenseng Taliptip, 45; Remedios Eguila, 50; Rodella de los Santos, 35; Lolita de los Santos, 50; and three-year-old Jhon Paul de los Santos.

Olavario said he has alerted Coast Guard stations in Palawan and Southern Tagalog to be on the lookout for the missing boat and its passengers.*NPB
