SC to launch electronic lib
at SU, 7 other law schools
BY ALLEN V DEL CARMEN

The Supreme Court will hold a simultaneous launching of the electronic library in eight law schools, including the Silliman College of Law, in Dumaguete City, at 2 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The e-library will give students in law schools in the provinces access to electronic data base on cases and laws in the country, Silliman Law Dean Myles Nicholas Bejar said.

The launch that will feature a video conference will be also held in the libraries of St. Louis in Arellano in Metro Manila, Aquinas in Legaspi, San Carlos in Cebu, Ateneo de Davao, Xavier in Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao State U in Marawi City.

It is part of the SU Law Week celebration, to be ushered in tomorrow by the first of the three-round national championship for the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition which will be held at the Luce Auditorium tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The opening of the three-round national championship, which will be held outside Metro Manila for the first time, will feature the teams from Ateneo de Manila and the University of the Philippines. The next two rounds in the championship of the Jessup -where the Philippine teams had been previously declared champions -- will be held Feb. 25 at Arellano University in Manila with Ateneo and UP facing separately the Far Eastern University - De La Salle (Makati) tandem.

The winner will represent the country in the international championship scheduled in Washington, D.C. in March. The moot court competition in Dumaguete will be a very good exposure for law students in the Visayas as it will focus on international human rights law issues, Bejar said.

The moot court provides an opportunity for participants to experience a semblance of appearing before the International Court of Justice, Bejar said, adding that the three teams had earlier submitted their briefs and will present their arguments before a panel of prominent lawyers and jurists.

About 300 law schools in the country participated in the initial rounds of the competition which selected the three best teams that will compete in the finals.

Another highlight of the Law Week celebration is the debate on the Anti-Terror Bill between SU and Xavier University debating teams, Bejar also said.*AVDelCarmen
