The safety of pedestrians and students still top the concerns
over the controversial construction of the overpass near Silliman
University, in Dumaguete City, which is almost completed now.
A petition signed by deans of the different departments at
Silliman University, professors, students, residents of the surrounding
neighborhood and the general public had asked concerned agencies
to ensure the proper use of the structure.
The petitioners said they feel that certain measures should
be implemented to prevent injuries to students after school hours.
They also claim that the structure may be used as a meeting
place or "estambayan" where people might engage in drinking, use
of drugs and other mischiefs, or for creating public disturbance.
The petitioners suggested that, since traffic is minimal
after school hours, the entrances to the overpass should be closed
and locked in the evening.
Councilor Myrish Cadapan-Antonio, who brought the issue to the
Dumaguete council, referred the petition to the committees on Public
Order and Safety and Family Life.*JG
