Transco towers
collapse feared

About 210 pieces of tower parts, mostly angle bars of different sizes, were discovered stolen Tuesday by still unidentified thieves from five transmission towers of the National Transmission Corp. in Bgy. Vista Alegre, Bacolod City, Zosimo Briones, Transco-Negros manager, said yesterday.

The estimated cost of the stolen items is about P100,000, he told the DAILY STAR.

Such thefts if not stopped, will cause the towers to fall because of the weakened support, which would cause a total black out of electricity in the northern part of Negros Occidental, which these towers serve, Briones said.

He said he and his staff reported the incident to Bacolod Police director, Senior Supt. Pedro C. Merced, Tuesday afternoon.

Merced told Briones he will deploy police in the area to apprehend the suspect, provided that Transco will file the complaint when that happens.

Briones said he is optimistic that, with the help of the police, theft of transmission line materials will stop. He is also calling the attention of all barangay chairpersons in the areas where Transco Transmission lines traverse to be vigilant against persons who may be planning to steal transmission line materials.*
