NBA tournament
moved to March

BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The staging of the Negros Basketball Association-Mayor's Cup Summer Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School has been moved to the third week of March.

The organizers decided to re-schedule the tournament to prepare better because it will be a longer tournament than what was planned before since more squads are expected to join, NBA president Oscar "Dodong" Bascon told the DAILY STAR.

A minimum of six squads will most likely see action in the tournament with already four teams confirming their entries so far, he added.

Teams that have already confirmed their entries are reigning titlist Toyota Warriors of Iloilo, Your Basketball Athletic Club-Emarken, Tribu Sugbu of Cebu and the Negros cagers, who bannered the Western Visayas men's basketball team in the recent National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games in Pangasinan.

The Negros squad, mentored by Elvis Atinado, will be composed of standouts from West Negros College and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

Bascon said he will meet with the NBA board members on either Thursday or Friday to finalize the hosting of the tournament that will adopt a single-round robin format with the top two teams advancing into the championship showdown.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia has already agreed to assist in the finances of the tournament, but I will set a meeting with him again to ask if he could hike his financial assistance because it will be a longer event that what was expected, Bascon added. *CIT
