Vegetable demo farm
thrives in Mambukal

An area of more than 1,000 square meters in Mambukal Resort has been developed by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist into a demo farm for high-value vegetables.

The OPA said in a press release that they established the agricultural productivity demonstration project late last year as an expansion of a similar farm behind the Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City.

Being planted in the Mambukal farm are lettuce, cauliflower, pepper, raddish, carrots, ampalaya, cucumber, broccoli, tomatoes and eggplants.

Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan said that they employ organic farming practices and covered vegetable technology and because the soil is sulfuric and unfit for farming, OPA makes use of container gardening.

Tabianan said that the project aims to encourage Negrenses to grow vegetables in their own backyards, not just for better nutrition but also to augment their income, the press release said.

Jose Mari Valencia, chief of the staff of Gov. Joseph Maraņon, said that the demo farm showcases the efforts of the provincial government in promoting food security.

It also a potential agro-tourism attraction, Valencia added in the same press release.*
