Spikers' win hikes La
Salle title haul to 20
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The University of St. La Salle tied its team title-haul of 20 last year after bringing home the championships in the aspirants boys and girls' volleyball hostilities of the NOPSSCEA sports meet over the weekend at the USLS Covered Court in Bacolod City.

La Salle's aspirants boys' squad trampled the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Talisay, 25-13, 25-7, to claim the crown, while its aspirants girls' demolished La Consolacion College-Main, 25-20, 25-17, for the title.

The Queen of Peace School-B retained its championship in the 10-Under boys' category by scoring a 26-24, 25-22 victory over La Consolacion Academy, while St. John's Institute-A outlasted USLS, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24, to take the 10-Under girls' crown.

QPS-A registered a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-18, 25-14 triumph against UNO-R Bacolod to finish third in the 10-Under boys' category as Bacolod Tay Tung High School placed second runner up in the 10-Under girls' division after beating SJI-B, 25-17, 25-18.

Ending up in the third and fourth places, respectively, in the aspirants boys' competitions were LCC-Main and St. Joseph's School-La Salle, while St. Scholastica's Academy and SJS-La Salle finished second and third runners-up, respectively, in the aspirants girls' play.

Aside from the volleyball crowns in the aspirants division, USLS, which emerged as the 'winningest' school in the 2004-2005 NOPSSCEA sports meet, earlier claimed 11 of the 18 team championships up for grabs in the collegiate division to pull away from the title race.

The La Sallians are already assured of preserving overall honors with only 8 more crowns to be jousted for and their closest rivals --- West Negros College and BTTHS --- have collected only six championships each so far.

La Salle ruled the men and women's categories of athletics, lawn tennis, swimming, taekwondo and volleyball, and sepak takraw.

USLS also took the crowns of the boys and girls' lawn tennis, boys' swimming and junior boys' volleyball in the secondary division. The La Sallians also ruled the boys and girls' swimming and boys' lawn tennis in the elementary contest.

Championships still to be disputed in the school-based meet are boys' basketball and boys' football in the aspirants division, and elementary boys' basketball. Also up for grabs are titles in the 10-Under category of the boys and girls' athletics, chess and soft volleyball, and boys' basketball.

WNC won its six titles by topping the men's chess, football and basketball tournaments in collegiate play, before ruling the junior boys' football and basketball, and girls' chess.

Tay Tung snared the titles in the high school division of the boys and girls' athletics and boys' badminton. BTTHS also reigned supreme in the boys and girls' chess and boys' athletics of the elementary division. *CIT
